Teaching American History

Charter Oak Collaborative:
Teaching American History in the Capitol Region

This exciting three-year initiative is designed to raise student achievement by improving teachers' knowledge, understanding, and
appreciation of American history. It will significantly change the way American History is taught in middle schools and high schools.

CREC's partners include the University of Connecticut (History Department, Neag School of Education and Thomas J. Dodd Research Center), local school districts (Bolton, East Hartford, Manchester, Plainville, Regional District 10, Vernon and West Hartford) as well as a number of museums and historical societies. Fifty-two teachers are participating in our 2005 program which features a series of field trips, dine and discuss sessions and a summer institute all focused on the topic of freedom.

We appreciate this opportunity, funded under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, and look forward to the challenging but rewarding work ahead.
