Connecticut Historical Society Background Information:

Established in Hartford in 1825, CHS is the seventh oldest historical society in the nation and houses one of the most distinguished museum and library collections in New England. The museum's collections include more than 200,000 prints and photographs and 35,000 objects, with strengths in 17th and 18th century furniture; costume and textiles; portraits and landscapes; tavern and trade signs; decorative arts; and toys and tools. The library holds more than 100,000 volumes and nearly three million manuscripts, including one of the nation's finest genealogical collections.

In recent years, CHS has developed a variety of interpretive exhibitions and also offers a wide range of educational programs for students in grades K through 12. Middle school and high school students are served via Connecticut History Day and a teen internship program that enables participants to research historical topics through the use of primary sources and artifacts while also furthering their analytical and critical thinking skills. The CHS has extensive experience in developing innovative curricula. CHS also provides professional development for teachers ranging from one-day workshops to multiple week programs.
