The children enrolled in the Capitol Region Choice
Program live in towns throughout the Capitol Region. They come from
diverse racial/ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. They have a
wide range of educational needs including both talented and gifted
programs as well as special education courses.
However, there is one common factor among all of
the children in the Choice Program. Whether the child is a kindergarten
student enrolled at a suburban elementary school or a high school
student enrolled in the Sports Sciences Academy in Hartford, the parents
of that child have sought the best educational opportunity for their
child.
For 2001-2002, there were 844 students attending
suburban schools. The racial breakdown of those students is 674 African-American
students, 127 Hispanic students, 9 Caucasian students and 3 Asian
students.
For 2001-2002, there were 93 students attending
urban schools. The racial breakdown of those students is 37 African-American
students, 33 Hispanic students, 22 Caucasian students and 1 Asian
student.
