CREC Hires Scarice as Magnet Middle School Principal

The Capitol Region Education Council has hired Thomas R. Scarice of North Haven – currently the assistant principal of J.A. DePaolo Middle School in Southington – as the new principal of the CREC Two Rivers Magnet Middle School, a five-town interdistrict magnet school focusing on scientific and environmental studies.  He begins August 1.

Scarice has also served as assistant principal for ACES’ Thomas Edison Magnet Middle School in Meriden.  Like CREC, ACES is a regional education service center.  Scarice was the supervisor of special education at Chapman and Highland Schools in Cheshire and also a guidance counselor at Norton School in Cheshire.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Connecticut and a master’s in educational counseling from Southern Connecticut State University, where he is also completing his Sixth Year Professional Diploma in Educational Leadership.

“Tom is an effective communicator, approachable and very knowledgeable and research-based,” said Joe Townsley, Ed.D., general director of magnet schools at CREC.  “Overall, his skills, experience at the middle-school level and enthusiasm clearly showed him to be a good fit for Two Rivers.  We are excited to write the next chapter for this school with Tom’s assistance.”

The CREC Two Rivers Magnet Middle School serves students from the towns of East Hartford, Glastonbury, Hartford, Manchester and South Windsor.  The school is based in East Hartford.

CREC is a non-profit, regional educational service center serving 35 Greater Hartford public school districts.  It was founded in 1966 by local school districts working together to solve common problems.  Today, CREC administers more than 120 programs and services spanning the entire educational spectrum with the same goal in mind.  CREC’s Division of Magnet Schools strives to offer the highest quality educational opportunities that reduce racial, ethnic and socio-economic isolation of students by initiating, developing and managing innovative educational programs.  For more information on CREC and Two Rivers Magnet Middle School, please visit www.crec.org/2rivers.
