CREC To Offer Culinary Arts, Direct Care Training in September

The Transition to Employment Services unit of the Capitol Region Education Council (CREC) is now recruiting students for both its Culinary Arts Training Program and Direct Care Training Program.

The culinary arts program includes classroom and hands-on instruction, as well as a paid internship in a local restaurant or food service company.  The five-week classroom component is conducted under the direction of a certified Qualified Food Operator (QFO) chef and prepares students for the QFO exam.  Hands-on experience takes place in the CREC Café.  The six-week internship provides on-the-job training in a supervised environment where the student can learn by doing.  Job placement assistance will be provided at the conclusion of the training.  The culinary program is geared to out-of-school youth, ages 18-21, who have earned a high school diploma.

The direct care program, now in its 15th year of operation, trains individuals to assist adults, children or teens with developmental disabilities.  Students are prepared to work with adults in residential, employment or recreational settings; or with children and teens in residential and educational settings.  The 12-week program includes a classroom component and an internship in a local human services agency.  Job readiness training and job placement assistance are provided.  Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED, possess a valid Connecticut driver’s license and have no serious police record.

Classes for both programs will begin in September.  Space is limited.  For additional information, please contact Maryanne Pascone at 860-509-3645 or mpascone@crec.org.  Applicants are welcome from any of the 35 school districts CREC serves.*
