CREC
Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts to
Host
Pilobolus Residency This Fall
Arts Organization
Will Spend Five Weeks with Magnet School
Students
(Greater
Hartford) – Coming on the heels of
its designation as the first high school
in the nation to attain the rights to and
perform the legendary musical Cats,
the CREC Greater Hartford Academy of the
Arts will now add the honor of being the
country’s first high school to have
the great American dance company Pilobolus
in residence.
Beginning in late October,
professional dancers from the arts organization
will run a five-week program for 28 sophomores,
juniors and seniors at the CREC arts magnet
school located on the Learning Corridor
campus.
The residency will lead
up to performances on Friday, December 9
and Saturday, December 10 that will feature
three segments: a student performance
of work they create during the residency;
a student performance of existing Pilobolus
choreography; and a performance from the
Pilobolus professionals themselves.
“This exciting pilot
program will broaden the experience and
capabilities of our talented students as
they undertake radically different themes
and approaches to choreography,” said
Dr. Herbert Sheppard, director of the academy.
“Working with masters from Pilobolus
– and experiencing their creative
process – will significantly raise
the artistic standard of these young dancers
and challenge them to adapt to divergent
styles.”
About Pilobolus
Pilobolus is a unique American arts organization
that grew out of a Dartmouth College dance
class in 1971. The company’s
signature collaborative choreographic process
and unique weight-sharing approach to partnering
– as well as its startling mix of
humor and invention – have turned
Pilobolus into a major American dance company
of international influence. For more
