Center for Creative Youth at Cape Verde:
Informational Open House
An informational open house session for prospective students of the Center for Creative Youth’s CulturArte 2007 Summer residential program will be held on Tuesday, January 9, at 6:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall at the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts. The two-week summer arts residency program in Cape Verde, Africa, was developed for gifted and talented arts students by the Capitol Region Education Council and the African nation of Cape Verde provides an intensive study of the arts.
This precollege program is modeled after the highly acclaimed CREC Center for Creative Youth program at Wesleyan University and allows American and Cape Verdean students to study American, Western European and Cape Verdean approaches to art forms such as dance, theater, visual arts and instrumental and vocal music. It gives students practical experience with a progressive curriculum that emphasizes leadership skills, historical context, interdisciplinary collaboration, multicultural learning and outreach opportunities.
The program has a strong focus on exposing students to Cape Verdean life and culture. Students leave with a culturally-rich exposure and understanding of their art form as well. Ideal candidates are those who have demonstrated talent or potential talent in their chosen major art form, display maturity, self-reliance, social responsibility, motivation and commitment to their art form, as well as the ability to work at an intensive pace in a closely-knit, diverse community.
The open house event will provide an excellent opportunity for parents and students to get background information on the program and Cape Verde, to see pictures of the residential site, get applications and to ask questions about the program and the application process.
