Entering Grade 5 or 6

ROOTS is a hands-on study of the history of Hartford County focusing on the Colonial and Native American time periods. Through several field trips, students will experience the cultural components (food, transportation, housing, etc) of different time periods and make comparisons to their lives today. They will improve writing skills through field trip-based journal writing activities.

Entering Grade 7

ROOTS II is an in-depth study of the history of Hartford's diverse racial and ethnic groups, involving a variety of educational activities such as group projects, field trips, readings and especially learning from each other. They will also be required to write their reflections by making connections with the previously learned material.  Students are expected to use the information learned about slavery, the Amistad case and cultural diversity to show appreciation, understanding and also to realize that their community influences their thinking towards others and their own identity.

Entering Grade 8

Environment & Technology students will participate in an exciting hands-on program that involves real-world applications of math and science. With field trips to environmental and technological sites in our community, and demonstrations and experimentations in the classroom, students will solve problems using scientific processes. Students will develop a better understanding of scientific concepts, as well as continue to develop writing and technology skills.

Entering Grade 9

Community Action students join together in a comprehensive study of the contributions they can make to their communities. Following team-building activities, students work together on such projects as serving food at a homeless shelter, working with the elderly and cleaning up parks and the riverfront. Students will further develop writing and technology skills by creating a newsletter and presentations documenting their experiences.

Entering Grade 10

Career Skills will explore their career options while building real-life job skills. This program is designed to help students prepare for the world of work by teaching them employability skills. They will research possible jobs, learn letter and resume writing, and practice interviews. There will also be opportunities for speakers and job shadowing from careers of interest.

Students will also have the choice of an afternoon activity which meets from 1:00-2:00. Some of these offerings are Arts & Crafts, Basketball, Computers, Soccer, Movie Review, International Games, and Drill Team.
