Entering Grade 5 or 6
ROOTS is a hands-on study of the history of Hartford
County focusing on the Colonial and Native American time periods. Through several field trips, students will experience the cultural
components (food, transportation, housing, etc) of different time
periods and make comparisons to their lives today. They will
improve writing skills through field trip-based journal writing
activities.
Entering Grade 7
ROOTS II is an in-depth study of the history of
Hartford's diverse racial and ethnic groups, involving a variety of
educational activities such as group projects, field trips, readings
and especially learning from each other. They will also be required
to write their reflections by making connections with the previously
learned material. Students are expected to use the information
learned about slavery, the Amistad case and cultural diversity to
show appreciation, understanding and also to realize that their community
influences their thinking towards others and their own identity.
Entering Grade 8
Environment & Technology students will participate in an exciting
hands-on program that involves real-world applications of math and
science. With field trips to environmental and technological sites in
our community, and demonstrations and experimentations in the classroom,
students will solve problems using scientific processes. Students will
develop a better understanding of scientific concepts, as well as
continue to develop writing and technology skills.
Entering Grade 9
Community Action students join together in a comprehensive study of the
contributions they can make to their communities. Following
team-building activities, students work together on such projects as
serving food at a homeless shelter, working with the elderly and
cleaning up parks and the riverfront. Students will further develop
writing and technology skills by creating a newsletter and presentations
documenting their experiences.
Entering Grade 10
Career Skills will explore their career options
while building real-life job skills. This program is designed to help
students prepare for the world of work by teaching them employability
skills. They will research possible jobs, learn letter and resume
writing, and practice interviews. There will also be opportunities
for speakers and job shadowing from careers of interest.
| Students will also have the choice of an afternoon
activity which meets from 1:00-2:00. Some of these offerings
are Arts & Crafts, Basketball, Computers, Soccer, Movie Review,
International Games, and Drill Team. |
