Professional Learning Model

Continuum of Professional Learning

All professional learning provided by Institute of Teaching and Learning is guided by the Continuum of Professional Learning. In order to be highly effective, all educators must have ongoing high quality professional learning opportunities that reflect educational trends, innovation, CT Core Standards, and research based practices that focus on student performance, achievement, and learning. Our professional learning workshops are designed and delivered based on this continuum and are tailored to meet the needs of educators in grades PreK to 12.

T&L professional learning opportunities will support participants at various levels of the Continuum of Professional Learning:

  • Developing Awareness: participants gain knowledge of instructional strategies, skills, and techniques grounded in CT Core Standards and research–based practices as they apply to specific grade levels or content areas.
  • Building Knowledge: participants engage in discussions, collaborations, peer observations, and/or presentations regarding instructional strategies, skills, and techniques grounded in CT Core Standards and research–based practices as they apply to specific grade levels or content areas.
  • Translating into Practice: participants apply knowledge of instructional strategies, skills, and techniques that are grounded in CT Core Standards and research–based practices to specific grade levels or content areas. ITL provides support through embedded coaching, lesson study, feedback on teaching via instructional rounds and walkthroughs, and data analysis.
  • Reflecting: participants engage in self-evaluation, critical analysis, and/or peer feedback sessions regarding instructional strategies, skills, and techniques grounded in CT Core Standards and research–based practices as they apply to specific grade levels or content areas; participants’ practices are refined according to self-reflection, feedback, and data analysis.
  • Building Capacity: participants work collaboratively and collegially with colleagues to share the instructional strategies, skills, and techniques for specific grade levels or content areas; participants look for opportunities to expand, evolve, and improve their knowledge, skills, and practices.
