CREC’s literacy specialists work collaboratively with schools and districts to analyze data about student learning. The goal is to determine areas of focused professional development, and follow-up coaching and resource development to help close achievement gaps. Professional development support may include curriculum mapping, assessment development, differentiated instruction, and research-based instructional strategies. Staff members will also assist teachers on how to prepare students for state assessments.

Writers Workshop

Writers workshop focuses on fostering lifelong writers. Its four principles include students writing about their own lives, using a consistent writing process, working in authentic ways, and developing independence as writers. The teacher acts as a mentor author, models writing techniques, and confers with students as they move through the writing process. Direct writing instruction occurs during the mini-lesson at the beginning of each workshop and is followed by a minimum of 45 minutes of active writing time. Students share their work at the end of each workshop.

Readers Workshop

The Readers Workshop focuses on nurturing lifelong readers; teaching strategies for reading and comprehension; provides opportunities for practice guided and independent reading, and differentiated lessons. Direct reading instruction occurs during the mini-lesson at the beginning of each workshop. It may be followed by reading aloud, independent reading and conferring, guided reading, response and reflection, and sharing.
