CREC Magnet School students achieved unprecedented student achievement results this year, as measured by the CMT and CAPT. We are especially proud of our results in 2010 because we faced a significant threat to Adequate Yearly Progress, as we added more than 800 students to our magnet schools. The CREC team successfully inculcated and supported upward of 500 new students from Hartford to the CREC school district as part of the Sheff v. O'Neill remedy and the results show extraordinary success.
District-wide, CREC magnet schools (grades 3 -8 in CMT and grade 10 in CAPT) showed a 5 percent increase in math and a 4 percent increase in reading.
District-wide, CREC magnet school students performed at 88% proficient or above on CMT mathematics and at 83% proficient or above on CMT reading.
District-wide, we have closed the achievement gap between economically disadvantaged students (receiving free or reduced lunches) who are now at 83% at or above proficient and their peers (88% at or above proficient) in math.

- Economically disadvantaged students who attended CREC magnet schools outperformed the state average by 26 percentage points in reading (78% vs. 52% state average).
- We have closed the achievement gap between economically disadvantaged students and their peers in math (92% free-reduced vs. 92% full-price).
Grade 8

- Students demonstrated at 5% increase in math and a 4% increase in reading over their 2009 scores.

Students at our East Hartford Glastonbury Elementary Magnet School (EHGEMS) performed at very high levels; 88% of the students tested at levels of proficient or above on CMT mathematics and at 80% tested at levels of proficient or above on CMT reading.
CREC's minority student population is thriving. Black students at MLC outperformed the state average in math by 18 percentage points (CREC 87%, State of CT 69%) and in reading by 19 percentage points (CREC 87%, State of CT 68%). Hispanic students at MLC outperformed the state average in math by 18 percentage points (CREC 88%, State of CT 70%) and in reading by 16 percentage points (CREC 81%, State of CT 65%).
At the Montessori Magnet School, students made unprecedented increases in their CMT scores. In 2009, the percentage of students at or above proficiency in math was 63%; in 2010, that number increased to 80%, an increase of 17 percentage points. In 2009, the percentage of students at or above proficiency in reading was 68%; in 2010, that number increased to 80%, an increase of 12 percentage points.
CREC's Two Rivers Magnet Middle School increased the percentage of students at or above proficient level in math to 91%, a gain of 6 percentage points over 2009. The percentage of students at or above proficient in reading went to 87%, an increase of 14 percentage points.
At the University of Hartford Magnet School, students again performed at very high levels. For example, disadvantaged grade 3 students outperformed the state average in reading by 26 percentage points (CREC 76%, State of CT 50%) and in math by 13 percentage points (CREC 81%, State of CT 68%). Economically disadvantaged grade 5 students outperformed the state average in reading by 32 percentage points (CREC 84%, State of CT 52%) and in math by 22 percentage points (CREC 96%, State of CT 74%).
CREC has closed the achievement gap. Black, Hispanic and economically disadvantaged students are scoring at the same levels as their peers. 88% of the 10th grade students at CREC high schools scored at a level of proficient or above. This is outstanding in and of itself. Even more impressive, however, is the fact that 90% scored at the level of proficient or above in reading at three of these CREC schools. This compares favorably with suburban schools across the state. Our efforts have brought a level playing field to the students in CREC's districts.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank our partnering districts and superintendents for their support. The statistics demonstrate a dedication and commitment from the community, parents, schools and towns. We are very proud of our students, teachers and administrators. Your unwavering support of CREC's schools has afforded our collective students the opportunity to meet with success.
