Diversity
The student body comprises a racial, ethnic and socio-economic diversity reflective of Greater Hartford. The Academy is committed to identifying and training students from diverse ethnic backgrounds who have developed or undeveloped talent in the performing, creative and visual arts.
In such a multicultural community, students develop an understanding of each other, as well as a greater knowledge of and appreciation for the arts from a broad perspective. Diversity also is sought in the selection of Academy faculty and staff. In developing the curriculum, special emphasis is placed on including courses specifically related to the racial and ethnic make-up of our student population, the Capitol Region community and our global society.
Academy courses include material from around the world and from previous centuries as well as from contemporary America. By sharing the traditions and achievements of various artists, Academy instructors encourage students to be receptive to their own possibilities and to the work of others.
Facility
The Academy is one of four CREC magnet schools located at the Learning Corridor, a $110 million campus on 16 acres, extending from the eastern edge of Trinity College’s campus on Broad Street in Hartford to the Institute of Living on Washington Street. This PreK-12 campus provides exquisite educational opportunities for neighborhood and suburban children alike, and helped to revitalize the surrounding neighborhood.
In addition to the school building, the Theater of the Performing Arts houses Academy productions, exhibitions and events and is available for rent to outside groups.
