June 28, 2010
Dear Friends,
The Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts recently celebrated 25 years of bringing outstanding arts instruction to high school students in the Greater Hartford area with several events at the Theater of the Performing Arts that brought together recent graduates, past alumni, parents of alumni, and others in the community who support the mission of the Academy.
The Academy Awards, held on June 10, celebrated our class of 2010 with senior performances and a graduation ceremony. That evening, the first ever Outstanding Alumni Award was presented to Christopher Shinn (Theater ’93) for his work as an American playwright. On June 11, joining current Academy Director Eric Bernstein at the 25th Anniversary Gala Reception and Alumni Concert were all five past directors of the Academy: Dr. Herb Sheppard (’00-’08), Mitzi Yates (Waterhouse) Lizarraga (’91-’00), Dr. Carolyn Dixon (’87-91), and founding director Dr. Janet Brown (’85-’87). The concert featured well know jazz musician Jimmy Green (Music ‘93) along with Zaccai Curtis (Music ‘99), David Baron (Music ‘06) and Jake Goldbas (Music ‘07). Also featured on the program were Caine Keenan (Dance ’00), recently named by Dance Magazine as one of the top 25 dancers in the nation, and vocalists Taylor Noble (Music ’08) and Michelle Murray Fiertek (Music ’95). In addition, Nicole Duennebier (Visual Arts ’01) had a one-person show in the Lobby Gallery.
The Gala Reception and Alumni Concert were a huge success raising more than $50,000 for the Endowment and re-engaging many alumni with the Academy.
As the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts moves forward another 25 years with providing local youth with quality arts education, we continue to embrace alumni as vital stakeholders in advancing the mission of the school. Alumni are encouraged to participate in and support the programs, services and events of the Arts Academy, and to pursue leadership opportunities available in our Parent, Friends, and Alumni Association. It is through your ideas, input and feedback that we can continue to celebrate our achievements and provide high quality arts instruction to a diverse body of talented students.
We recognize that alumni seek to reunite with the Academy, and we truly look forward to connecting with you! By completing the Alumni Contact Form we can keep you informed of special events at the Academy and ways in which you can make a difference in the lives of young aspiring artists through the use of your time or by becoming an Academy Donor.
It is my goal to serve as an advocate for alumni; representing your interests in working with the Academy, its constituencies, and the broader community. Through your active involvement, we hope that you can serve in the broader community as ambassadors for the Arts Academy and for education in general. If you are seeking ways in which to participate in and support the programs, services and events of the Arts Academy, please feel free to contact me. Your contributions of time, talent and treasure are greatly appreciated. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Erica Callahan
