Admission / Auditions
The Academy accepts students who have an interest in pursuing the performing, creative or visual arts as a career, or as an avocation. Students should be aware that academic, creative and performance standards are the same for all students, whether or not a career path is followed. Admission is through application and audition. Students must be entering or enrolled in a public high school, and are encouraged to spend a minimum of three years at the Academy. Applications for admission are available through local school districts' teachers and guidance counselors, and from the Academy.
We encourage parents and students to attend one of the Open House Information Sessions to learn more about the program, criteria for acceptance, and coordination with sending schools.
Information sessions will be held on: November 12th, December 9th, January 14th, and February 5th. All meetings will begin at 7:00 pm. in the Theater of the Performing Arts at the Learning Corridor, 359 Washington Street, Hartford, CT. Free parking available in the Learning Corridor Garage-Enter from Brownell Street.
All students who wish to apply must visit the Academy for one-half day visit to participate in one department they are considering. These visits may be scheduled at an Open House or by calling Jill Giles, Student Services Coordinator at (860) 757-6322.
Auditions are held at the Academy, and are scheduled in the spring for admission the following September. Students applying to the Academy will be given an appointment for an audition and interview with the audition panel, the Academy Director and/or the Department Chairperson.
Audition dates for admission for the 2009-10 school year are:
- Saturday, March 7, 2009, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Saturday, March 14, 2009, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Applications need to be submitted no later than February 16, 2009.
Comprehensive audition guidelines will be sent to students together with their application for admission. Following is a brief description of audition requirements:
- Theatre students present a memorized, two-minute monologue or soliloquy from a play, and may be asked to participate in a group improvisation.
- Dance-Come dressed in proper attire (leotards, tights, ballet/jazz shoes). Jazz pants, sweat pants, gym pants, fitted t-shirts will also be allowed if you do not currently own the proper dance attire. Hair must be securely tied or pinned and no jewelry worn. The audition consists of a class that will include a variety of techniques.
- Music students present a two-minute prepared, solo piece, and are asked to play or sing scales, and to sight read, if possible. Voice students should bring music and the school will provide an accompanist.
- Creative Writing students must submit two or three poems or a short story at least two weeks prior to the interview. At the audition, writers will be given a short piece to write, followed by discussion.
- Visual Arts students will be asked to bring a portfolio of work for review. Visual Arts will include concentrations in drawing and painting, sculpture and photography.
- Theater Design and Production students will be asked to bring any items that will show us they have some experience in theater and production.
- Musical theater-Students are required to audition in all three disciplines (dance, voice, acting).

- Music-Come prepared to sing one song, preferably from musical theater repertory. You must bring the sheet music
(an accompanist will be provided or you may bring an instrumental (no voices) accompaniment CD or tape.
- Acting-Students should present one memorized, two-minute monologue. It should be age appropriate and must be from a play. Pieces from monologue books or written by students are not acceptable.
Tuition
Tuition for the 2008-09 school year is $3,675. Some school districts designate a specific number of students for whom tuition to the Academy will be paid by their local school boards. The Academy may also accept students whose tuition is paid either by their families or by some source of funding other than school boards.
