Application and Admissions Information
CCY at Cape Verde, CulturArte seeks and accepts students who have demonstrated talent or potential talent in their chosen major art form. Students who have finished 10th and 11th grades (ages 15-18) in June of 2008 may apply. Ideal candidates are those who display maturity, self-reliance, social responsibility, motivation and commitment to their art form, as well as the ability to work at an intensive pace in a closely knit, diverse community.

Applications for the program are now available. Selection is based on the written application, two recommendations from teachers or advisors, parent/guardian letter of support, a residential interview and (if applicable) an audition.

It is the applicant’s responsibility and not that of the CCY at Cape Verde office to insure all parts of the application arrive to the office by the deadline including all letters arriving separately.

Students with financial need are encouraged to apply as financial assistance is available based on talent, recommendation and need.

The deadline for completed applications is February 1, 2008. Letters of acceptance are mailed on or about April 4, 2008.

Auditions and Interviews
Students must audition for the program, in their chosen art form, if the institution(s) or person(s) with whom they have studied is not immediately recognized by CREC. Once the office has received the completed application materials, students will be contacted with an audition date, time and place if necessary.

All students are required to have a scheduled residential interview. Once the office has received the completed application materials, students will be contacted with an interview date, time and place.

Fee and Scholarships
The fee for the program is $5,000. This price is an estimate. The price may alter slightly due to changes in flight costs and gasoline surcharges. The cost includes: entrance visa, bus travel to Logan Airport in Boston from Hartford and the return, flights to and from Africa, lodging, all meals, all transportation in Africa, classes, supplies, admissions to all events. Students with financial need are encouraged to apply. Financial assistance is available based on talent, recommendation and need.

Housing and Dining
Students will be housed at a residential school. Students will share a residence hall with a supervisory staff of residential advisors. There will be a 7 to 1 (or less) student/advisor ratio. A Residential Director will oversee the advisor staff and the general well being of the student community. Male and female rooms will be on separate floors. Curfews and residential rules will be strictly enforced for the safety of the students.

Dining facilities will be in the school’s cafeteria and will provide three meals daily.

A nurse will travel to Cape Verde with the students. For emergency medical care, a hospital is within a half-mile of the school. Students must provide health insurance information before entering the program to assist with emergency care, if needed. Any medical issues must be disclosed on the medical form after acceptance by the stated deadline. Parents/Guardians will be financially responsible for emergency room or any hospital visits.

Faculty
Members of the faculty are working, professional artists and skilled instructors. They are drawn from a variety of backgrounds including university faculty, performing arts schools and professional organizations.
