2007 visual arts students and faculty sketching at the historic pillary in Cidade Velha.Students will attend daily morning classes in their selected art form. Both American and Cape Verdean instructors will share their expertise with the students. Classes will include American/Anglo as well as African approaches to each art form. In all classes, American and Cape Verdean students will learn together. Afternoon sessions will include interdisciplinary workshops, leadership workshops, excursions to share and teach art with outlying communities (schools, art centers, community gathering centers) field trips to historical sites, art venues and social and community events. Students will leave with a culturally rich exposure and deepened understanding of their art form.
All students will be required to submit a self-reflective report at the completion of the program, which should be accompanied by photos, slides, video, writings and/or other pieces of art. At the conclusion of the program, in-depth evaluations will be prepared for each student by their artist/instructors.
All students will be expected to make presentations for any of the following: CCY Wesleyan symposium, home school, Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts, recruitment events, program funding events.
Dance
Dance students will engage in classes that incorporate elements of American and Western European contemporary dance along with native Cape Verdean dance forms.
Theater
Theater students will engage in classes that focus on ensemble work and the physical aspects of the art of acting.
Visual Arts
Visual arts students will engage in classes that concentrate predominately on three-dimensional art: sculpture, pottery, as well as batik cloth dying, weaving and other native Cape Verdean
art genres.
Music/Instrumental or Vocal
Music students may focus in either instrumental or vocal music. Instrumentalists will focus primarily on the study of their instrument but will also have opportunities to sing. The instruments considered for the program include: guitar, bass, clarinet, drums, saxophone, trombone and trumpet. Instrumentalist should have some background in jazz and be able to improvise. Vocalist will focus on choral and large group work but may also gain exposure to playing an instrument.
