Explorations in Science
The Academy provides supplemental outreach activities to students who do not attend the daily program. Explorations runs after school and on some Saturdays during the academic school year.

Students in grades 6-8 explore physics, earth/space science, biology, chemistry, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, probability/statistics and scientific discovery using real world and in-depth educational experiences. Experiences include hands-on research, application and independent study in various disciplines.

Frontiers in Science
There is no debate that our nation is facing a shortage of workers in the sciences and engineering fields. We need to help our young people identify and develop the skills needed to obtain careers in those areas.

Numerous studies and media reports have detailed this troubling trend. A study by the U.S. Congress found that we rank 16 out of 17 nations in the proportions of 24-year olds who earn degrees in natural sciences or engineering as opposed to other major fields.

There is a critical need to build our student’s awareness of career paths in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The Frontiers in Science: Career Exploration addresses this need by helping middle school students build an awareness of careers in STEM. Frontiers in Science: Career Exploration is a three-week summer program that immerses 150 middle school students in STEM careers. Students rotate through focused strands on science, engineering, and technology. The program weaves mathematics, a fundamental part of each strand, through all subjects.

Instructors engage students each week in inquiry based investigations that reflect what people working in different STEM careers actually do. The program will be located on the Learning Corridor campus in Hartford. The Greater Hartford Academy of Mathematics and Science will provide the state-of-the art science labs and equipment for use during the three-week program. Beyond conducting their own investigations, students will interact with leaders in industry and tour industries to see STEM careers in action. The Frontiers in Science: Career Exploration program will help provide ‘pathways’ to our future scientists, engineers, and mathematicians.
