Greetings from the Career Center! We hope you have all started the year off on a good foot and are ready for the opportunities, successes and hard work ahead. The Career Center is working hard to assure that we continue to provide you with all of the tools necessary to succeed in high school and in college. The Career Center’s library is continuing to grow with more view books, SAT/ACT testing information, resume and application help books and just recently, books on specific fields and occupations.
Additionally, this year we are excited to announce the addition of a second guidance counselor, Megan Legassey. Megan will be working with the sophomore class and teaching the College and Career Planning class. She will stay with the Class of 2013 through their senior year. In addition to the arrival of Mrs. Legassey, we plan to continue to support your efforts at home through the use of the Parent Portal system.
Parent Portal
The Parent Portal system allows you to check on your student’s academic and attendance records for all classes. Through Parent Portal, students and parents will have the ability to track academic progress as well as keep in touch with events at GPA. For questions about the Parent Portal system, please contact Ms. Serrano in the Guidance Office at (860) 512-3712.
Appointments in the Career Center
Students are welcome to make an appointment in the Career Center with their counselor any time in the school year. Students may set up an appointment with Ms. Serrano before school, after school, or during lunch time. Students will not be allowed to set up an appointment during class time, no exceptions! Parents are also welcome to participate in meetings with counselors.
College Visits
This fall we will be having a number of colleges from Connecticut and surrounding states coming in to talk to our juniors and seniors. We encourage all students to attend these college visits to find out more about campus life, the admission and application process, and academic offerings. For smaller colleges, students should sign up for these at least one day before the visit. Visits from larger colleges and universities will be open to all interested students.
Transcript Requests
By now, seniors should be well into their college application process. Once a student has completed a college application, he/she should be sure to contact at least two teachers, administrators, or acquaintances to request recommendation letters. Students should be sure to inform them of the deadline for their application at the time of the request. Next, students must stop by the Guidance Office to complete a High School Transcript Request Form for each college. Students may also download the form online. Please note that GPA staff does not have accessibility to send MCC transcripts. Students are responsible for requesting their MCC transcripts through the MyCommnet system in order for MCC credits to transfer. For directions on how to request an MCC transcript, please contact Ms. Serrano.
We wish all our students a successful year. Remember, be respectful, be responsible, and be safe!
