August 20, 2008
Dear Students and Parents,
Welcome back to our new school year. We have a number of changes and new additions to report and you should all be extremely proud of your work last year. Our CAPT scores have been reported and our tenth grade students performed very well. Students are assessed in four areas and rated on five levels: advanced, goal, proficient, basic, and below basic. The subject results are broken down as follows:
| Math |
90.6% proficient or higher |
| Science |
84.4% proficient or higher |
| Reading Across Disciplines |
81.3% proficient or higher |
| Writing Across Disciplines |
87.5% proficient or higher |
All these percentages mean that we made adequate yearly progress without accounting for the confidence interval, quite a feat. This year we intend to continue our after-school CAPT prep program and provide practice for all tenth grade students as well as developmental support to those students with the greatest needs.
If your student took the CAPT at Great Path Academy last March, his or her score report is attached. You will also find a score interpretation brochure. We would be happy to talk with you further about your student’s scores and any assistance you may need.
For the 2008-2009 school year we have created a Developmental Center. All Great Path Academy students will take an initial assessment in reading, writing, and math. Based on these scores, and prior Connecticut Mastery or CAPT scores, we will assess your child’s individual needs. Based on those score reports your child may be scheduled into more intensive, need-based classes to further strengthen his or her skills in more challenging areas. The Center will be lead by Mr. Alan Paluck, in conjunction with Ms Taylor-Jackson, our reading teacher, Ms Shelia Marin, our math teacher; and two tutors: Kellie Wagner and Anthony Ettienne-Modeste.
Please complete the attached Emergency Card and return it to the Main Office on Orientation Day. Your child’s schedule will be available on Orientation Day. Great Path courses may be changed up until September 12. If needed, please contact Mr. Muska, our guidance counselor, at pmuska@mcc.commnet.edu. You may also reach him by telephone at 860 512-3565.
We have hired a few new faculty members. Mr. Gregory Buonome will be joining us as our Assistant Principal, responsible for assisting students in making academic and social-emotional achievement as they prepare for college. Mr. Buonome joins us after having been teaching at East Hartford Middle School.
Ms Tara Taylor Jackson will be joining us as our reading teacher. Ms Taylor-Jackson has been teaching English at Bulkeley High School.
Ms Sheilia Marin will be our math teacher. Mrs. Marin will be teaching algebra I and statistics as well as helping students prepare for the CAPT assessment.
