CREC Schools Participate in Read Across America

(Hartford, CT) On Monday, March 3, schools across the nation celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday. As part of the celebration, CREC elementary schools throughout the district participated in Dr. Seuss' “Read Across America Day”. This is an annual event where schools ask local community members to read Dr. Seuss books to classes of students.

This year, CREC administrators, family members, and special guests read to students in dozens of classrooms from PreK through grade 5. Readers are allowed to select the book they read, often reading from a childhood favorite. “Our students lapped it up,” said Cindy Rigling, principal of the CREC International Magnet School. “They enjoyed being read the nonsensical Seuss stories by our fellow CREC community members.”

After reading, many classrooms present cards or small gifts to the special guests to show their appreciation. Rigling thanked her guests with a Dr. Seuss tote bag that read, "You're never too old, too wacky to wild, to pick up a book and read to a child."

Schools in the district participate in Read Across America every year, and the day has become a special affair for students and staff, many of whom dressed up as their favorite book characters. “We had plenty of Cat in the Hat and other Dr. Seuss character costumes, but the hallways were also filled with Harry Potters, Hermiones, Katniss Everdeens and Viola Swamps,” explained Vivian Novo-MacDonald, assistant principal of the CREC Montessori Magnet School. “We even had Linnea from ‘Linnea in Monet's Garden.’”
