CREC Discovery Academy to Cut Ribbon on New School Building

Summary:

The CREC Discovery Academy will hold a ribbon cutting for its new school building in Wethersfield on October 9.

“A school is one of the most important buildings in a community,” said CREC Superintendent Dina Crowl. “At CREC, we have been fortunate to be able to build a number of state-of-the-art buildings with innovative spaces that are specific to theme-based learning. The CREC Discovery Academy's new building focuses on science, technology, math, and science and will afford students the opportunity to explore, inquire, learn, and play in an authentic learning environment that was built to promote excellence.”

The CREC Discovery Academy’s new, 72,000 square-foot building is located at 176 Cumberland Avenue in Wethersfield, and it is built to enhance the school’s theme of interactive exploration. It officially opened to students on the first day of school—September 2.

The building’s exterior design provides interactive ways for students to explore nature. Rolling topography and extensive vegetation create nature trails; discovery areas; planting beds; fields; playscapes; and play yards. There are also segregated automobile and bus drop offs.

Inside the facility, there are dramatic features and exhibits in the main lobby, 24 core classrooms, and additional classrooms for science, literacy, art, and music. There’s also a computer lab inside a new library and media center.

“The families, staff, and students at CREC Discovery Academy could not be more excited to be in our permanent home in beautiful Wethersfield,” said Principal Lynn Toper. “As a science, technology, engineering, and math school, we now have the opportunity to explore along our nature trails, plant in our rooftop gardens, and engage in larger scale robotics and engineering projects in connection with our theme and community partners. It is simply an inspiring place to be.”

The CREC Discovery Academy, an interdistrict magnet school, currently serves students in preschool through grade four. It will expand to include fifth-grade classes next school year, ultimately boosting its enrollment to 480 students.
