Cast and Crew of Antigone Help Local Veterans

(Hartford, CT) The cast and crew of “Antigone” worked hard to put on four memorable performances, and they did so while also giving back to their community.

The 43 CREC Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts students collected school supplies for their fellow classmates. They also wrote letters to both military veterans at the Connecticut Veterans Home in Rocky Hill and to active members of the military.

Monetary donations from the audience were given to South Park Inn in Hartford, an organization that helps homeless veterans, and to Fisher House in West Haven, a place where military families can stay while their loved ones are healing at a Veterans Affairs hospital.

In lieu of opening and closing night gifts, the school donated additional money to both organizations. The school’s donation to the Fisher House included the purchase of a walkway brick.

The charities were selected because of the subject matter of the production. “Antigone” is about losing loved ones in a war. As a result, the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts decided to focus on assisting organizations that help veterans.

The CREC Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts regularly uses community service to deepen the artistic experience for students. Community service teaches students that art is about more than entertainment. It should also benefit humanity.

“Antigone” opened on November 7 at the Block Box Theater at the Theater for the Performing Arts in Hartford. Additional performances were held on November 7, November 14, and November 15.

Kim West, a CREC Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts faculty member, directed the production, which had a modern twist.
