About Performance Task Rubric Development
The new Smarter Balanced assessments include performance tasks to assess students' knowledge and skills as they respond to complex real-world problems. These multi-step activities are meant to measure capacities such as depth of understanding, writing and research skills, and complex analysis, which cannot be adequately assessed with traditional multiple choice or closed-response assessment questions.
Educators are increasingly interested in developing their own, curriculum-aligned performance-based assessments of student learning. Developing aligned tasks with high-quality scoring rubrics that permit authentic, valid measurement of student learning is no easy task. CREC staff are knowledgeable in educational measurement and assessment development, and are looking to support educators in developing reliable and valid performance-based measures of student achievement.
