Read Every Day!

Our Goal: For students to read as often as they can over summer vacation to broaden their horizons and prevent “summer slide.”

The Rules:

  • You can read any books (or articles) that you want!
  • Students should read a minimum of 20 minutes a day, five days a week in the summer.
  • For each book you read (or for every five articles), you can fill out a “Raffle Review” ticket to enter a gift card raffle at the start of the school year!

What is "Summer Slide"?

The reasons why we believe so strongly in consistent reading in the summer have everything to do with the research regarding “summer slide” and academic progress. In a nutshell, students who read during the summer maintain the learning that they developed during the course of the previous school year. The research is also clear about the effects of students not reading over the summer:

  • Students can lose up to 25% of their reading level over the summer.
  • Students can lose up to three months of their education over the summer.
  • This loss is cumulative –so by the time a student enters middle school or high school, he or she could be years behind grade-level standards.

Read Anywhere!

Read anywhere! At home, at the park, at the library, on the bus, on the beach…

Try setting up a plan for reading (which days, time of day, location)—and stick to it!

  • For reluctant readers: you might want to avoid their bedrooms or other places that they associate with sleeping.
  • For readers who do well with routine: choosing a consistent place to read might be best.

And we love getting photos! Send us pictures of you reading to ewright@crec.org.

To summarize, we don't want students losing all their hard work during the school year over the summer. By reading books that interest them, they will return to school better prepared to learn and grow as individuals.

Read Books. Win Prizes!

For each book you read (or for every five articles), you can fill out a “Raffle Review” ticket. Bring those tickets on the first day of school and you can enter a gift card raffle at the start of the school year!

So What Should I Read?

Whatever you like! Graphic novels, magazine articles, and newspaper articles can be read, along with novels and nonfiction books. Audiobooks are okay, too!
