River Street School Information

River Street School provides a comprehensive offering of academic and life skills curricula designed to deliver successful learning experiences commensurate with each student's developmental and cognitive level. This programming is offered during a traditional school year and during our six-week summer school program. Our goal is to enhance skill acquisition and to shape appropriate behaviors while promoting social and emotional growth in our students. Instruction and activities take place in our classrooms, our suites for instruction in life skills curricula, and our vocational building. A staffing ratio of one staff for every two students reflects our commitment to providing structured and individualized instruction for each student based on their unique needs.

For students aged 15 and older, the Vocational Service Department at River Street School provides vocational assessment and training with the goal of helping students develop basic skills that best equip them to transition to an optimal work setting upon graduation.

River Street School offers also offers Extended Day Programming at our Windsor campus, giving students who need it an additional twenty-two hours of programming each week.

All of our programming is supported by a clinical team including psychologists, speech-language pathologists, social workers, case managers, a nursing staff, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and certified behavior analysts. Our clinical staff provides daily consultation with instructional staff, family consultation, interagency coordination, and professional development training for other professionals. Clinical services include:

  • Individual and group counseling
  • Occupational and physical therapy
  • Psychiatric evaluation
  • Speech-language therapy
  • Psychological evaluation and consultation
  • School nursing services
  • Behavioral assessment and management
  • Neurology, psychiatry and genetics consultation
  • Individual and group communication therapy
  • Behavioral outreach consultation and programming
  • Assessment and assistive technology
  • Augmentative/alternative communication

River Street School also manages two community-based group homes located in nearby towns. Residential programming is provided year-round and students in the Group Homes are also enrolled at River Street School for the full school year and summer school. Service is carefully coordinated between these two programs to achieve the maximum possible growth for each student. This unique collaboration meets the needs of select students who require instruction in a residential setting, as well as in school, to achieve success.
