River Street School Information

Classrooms
Classrooms at River Street provide a comprehensive offering of academic and life skills curricula. A staffing ratio of one staff for every two students reflects our commitment to providing structured and individualized instruction for each student based on their unique needs.

Clinical Services Department
The Clinical Services Department is made up of a multidisciplinary team including school psychologists, speech-language pathologists, social workers, case managers, a nursing staff, and behavior analysts. This full-time team of specialists provide evaluation, intervention, therapy, consultation and training for all of River Street's programs.

In addition, the physical therapy and occupational therapy services at River Street School provide evaluation, direct intervention, and consultation services to students, classroom staff and families. The goal is to assist the team in maximizing the student’s abilities within the school environment and throughout the school day. A variety of interventions are utilized including sensory integration, neuro-developmental technique, therapeutic listening, and adaptive equipment assessment.

A range of specialists also consult with River Street School on an on-going basis. These include a pediatrician/geneticist, a child psychiatrist and a neurologist.

Vocational Services Department
The Vocational Services Department provides vocational assessment and training for students aged 13 through 21. Currently the Department provides services to 60% of the students enrolled in River Street School. The Department's mission is to assist a student's transition to an optimal work setting upon graduation. Such placements allow the graduates to use their highest level of skill in a setting that provides the greatest degree of independence.

Extended Day Program
Extended Day and Extended Year Programming is a continuation of our school program with clinical support for students needing additional hours for skill acquisition. The Extended Day Program operates five days a week from the end of the typical school day through the dinner hour. The Summer School Program runs for six weeks during the summer for students needing continuous instruction. Both programs continue the individualized approach and clinical support offered during the traditional school day.

Community Based Group Homes
Community Based Group Homes serve adolescents aged 8 to 21 with a diagnosis of Mental Retardation, PDD and Autism. Within the home, activities for daily living, independent living skills, social skills and self preservation skills are addressed.

Family Support Services
Family Support Services is an ongoing effort by River Street School to provide families of all our students, and all families with special needs children, with support and information. This effort includes communication between staff and parents; The Parent Series - a series of evening meetings featuring guest speakers, parent training opportunities, and discussions open to all families with children; a lending library of videotapes on various topics related to parenting and special needs issues; and resources provided through our web site.

River Street School has a long history of service and commitment to meeting the needs of the most challenging students. We offer these children and young adults the chance to grow. In all our activities, we look to provide solutions to the problems our students face every day. We believe the future is unlimited, positive and filled with potential.
