( BACK TO SOUNDBRIDGE PROGRAMS AND SERVICES )
Purpose:
To provide intensive auditory-oral instruction to meet the
needs of students with hearing loss who have significant
delays in the development of language, with consequent
delays in reading, writing, and all other academic areas
dependent on linguistic abilities.
Components:
- Teacher of the Hearing-Impaired who specializes in helping children who have hearing loss learn spoken language through audition.
- Small classes with systematic instruction by the Teacher of the Hearing-Impaired to improve each student’s language, auditory, speech, and literacy abilities.
- Audiological support services including ongoing audiological assessment of students’ hearing, their personal amplification, and their FM equipment. Cochlear implant mapping (available, by parent choice).
- Screening, assessment and determination of individual objectives
for each child.
- Mainstreaming in regular public school classes, as appropriate for each student, according to language and vocabulary levels.
- Oral interpreting or C-Print support, as appropriate.
- Language-based resource support for students in their mainstream classes.
- Instruction in study skills.
- Small group sessions focussed on social skills and self advocacy.
- Career awareness and transition planning.
- Parent support, parent network, educational and social events for families.
- Occupational therapy, physical therapy, psychological evaluations, counseling, available as appropriate.
