Building Transformational Community and Ally-ship
The Hartford Region Open Choice Program partnered with Hartford’s Discovery Center to develop an interactive, two-day workshop series that took place on April 9 and 10 at The Learning Corridor in Hartford. The theme was "Building Transformational Community and Ally-ship.” Approximately 35 Open Choice participants and their suburban allies connected with each other in a nurturing environment. They were led through experiential diversity and inclusion activities, teambuilding activities, and facilitated dialogue by Discovery Center staff trained in transformational dialogue technique and anti-racist pedagogy. The students grappled with manifestations of racism and other forms of oppression in their schools, identified ally behaviors, and co-created action plans to improve their school cultures. They also toured the Old State House and enjoyed an afternoon of bowling together.
