CREC Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts High School Student is Write On
(Hartford, Conn.) Sophia Ciraldo, a student at CREC Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts High School, was selected as a winner in Write On, Hartford Stage’s Annual Young Playwrights’ Competition for Connecticut students in grades 9 through 12. The program is unique in its offering of professional-quality play development to a select few young, aspiring writers. Sophia is a tenth grade, full-day student, who lives in Glastonbury. She was one of four students chosen to participate.
She and the other Write On playwrights had the unique opportunity to learn about professional play development first-hand from playwright Mfoniso Udofia, a first-generation Nigerian-American storyteller and educator. Over several months, Udofia led the students in intensive writing workshops at Hartford Stage and helped them turn their ideas into 10-minute play scripts. The program culminated in late March with readings of their plays performed by local actors and directed by professional directors, who also worked closely with the young playwrights.
