CREC Workshop Focuses on Helping Students with Autism

(Hartford, CT) To help better serve students with autism spectrum disorder, CREC’s Technical Assistance and Brokering Services and Rethink, a CREC partner that promotes evidence-based treatment solutions, recently held a workshop for educators on inclusive practices.

Rethink’s Patricia Wright works to promote quality outcomes for individuals with disabilities and was the presenter.

During the workshop, many simple ideas regarding inclusive practices were shared. For example, one individual said students with autism should take pictures with friends, explaining that this helps students build social skills by attracting more typical peers. Several free and low-cost apps were also demonstrated during the workshop, including a talking visual story creator called Pictello, and new registered behavior technician competencies were discussed, which prompted discussion about how paraprofessionals can improve their skills when working with students with autism.

Hartford-based MOVIA Robotics amazed participants when it introduced a robot named Bob. The workshop demonstrated how robotics is being used to boost outcomes for students with autism spectrum disorder.

“I walked away with a lot of fabulous ideas,” said Tia Alves, a community-based transition academy case manager for Pierson House.
