CREC to Hold October Mindfulness Conference

Summary:

On October 21, CREC and Central Connecticut State University will co-host their second annual mindfulness conference. The focus will be on the health, wellness, and emotional well-being of children, youth, and families.

Mindfulness is being aware of what is happening in the present moment, and the practice has been integrated successfully into many fields, including mental health, business and industry, and education.

This year’s conference, open to anyone, will be an opportunity for individuals—from educators and mental health professionals to parents and business people, and the goal is to share best practices, research, theories, and ideas to deepen and expand the understanding of mindfulness in areas, such as kindergarten through grade 12 classrooms, colleges and universities, and behavioral health settings.

The conference will be held at Central Connecticut State University’s Memorial Hall. Registration is from 7:30 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. There will also be optional Tai Chi and Yoga 4 Classrooms lessons from 7:45 a.m. to 8:15 a.m.

The keynote speaker will be Tish Jennings, an associate professor of education at the University of Virginia. Jennings is an internationally-recognized leader in the field of mindfulness and specifically studies the impact of teacher stress in the social and emotional context of student learning.

Andy Lee, the chief mindfulness officer for Aetna, will be the lunchtime speaker. He will discuss how to implement mindfulness in the workplace.

The cost of the conference is $100 per person. This cost includes a continental breakfast and lunch. To learn more about the conference, or to register, visit www.crec.org/mindfulness.

In addition to attending the conference, you can also join @CRECEducation at noon on October 5 for a Twitter chat about mindfulness. This chat, hosted by both CREC and Central Connecticut State University, will generate discussion in advance of the conference. To participate in the Twitter chat, follow #CRECchat.
