CREC Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts Forms New Partnership With American School for the Deaf

Summary:

Thursday, November 13, 2014, will mark the beginning of a new partnership between the CREC Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts and the American School for the Deaf.

Both schools will share center stage during the 2014 Connecticut Poetry Festival, a four-day festival presented by Riverwood Poetry Series. The festival will feature both prominent and new local poets, and the schools will perform student-written poetry at the festival’s kickoff event — “Signed and Spoken Word.”

During the event, 16 CREC Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts high school students and two teachers will read their original poems while an interpreter translates the poems into sign language. Eight American School for the Deaf students will present their poems in sign language with their teachers reading the words out loud.

Admission to the event is free and open to the public. Following the reading, there will be a question and answer session. Refreshments will also be served.

The November 13 event is the first joint event between the two schools. The schools are working on plans to collaborate again in the spring.

The CREC Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts is an interdistrict magnet high school located in Hartford. It provides professional training in the arts, including creative writing, and it offers both half-day and full-day programs.

The American School for the Deaf is the oldest special education institution in the United States and the birthplace of deaf education in America. It is located in West Hartford and serves children with hearing loss who are in preschool through grade 12.
