Job-Embedded Instruction Model for Paraprofessionals
As the CREC Job-Embedded Instructional Model evolved, a primary concern was to ensure that the curriculum met key areas of need and focused on essential content to meet these needs. CREC utilized a standards-based approach to curriculum development by starting with the draft Guidelines for Training and Support of Paraprofessionals, developed by the Connecticut State Department of Education and the Connecticut Birth to Three System.
The competencies a paraprofessional should demonstrate at various stages of training and experience are identified at three performance levels (Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3) for each Responsibility.
The Basic Program offers five modules to respond to the instructional needs of paraprofessionals at Levels 1 and 2. These modules include: Roles and Responsibilities, Behavior, Communication, Ethics and Legal Issues and Instruction. Advanced modules offer staff development in Level 2 and Level 3 aspects of a paraprofessional's instructional roles and responsibilities. Current advanced modules include: Job Coaching, Reading in the Elementary Classroom, Language Development, Strategic Tutoring and the Exceptional Learner. Each program module lists the specific Responsibilities addressed through training and mentoring.
Additional modules are being developed to meet other competencies. Our work will continue to reflect the importance of selecting program content that reflects the learning expectations set forth in our State Guidelines.
