How can Speech Pathologists provide speech and language services in the classroom using the general education curriculum? In accordance with the reauthorization of IDEA 2004, LRE, Standards-Based reform, and best practices for providing services in authentic, functional contexts, this initiative provides a useful, rational framework for providing inclusive speech and language services. Research has shown that a classroom based approach to language facilitation throughout the curriculum is not only effective, but provides opportunities for meaningful social contexts which are optimal for speech and language intervention. A systematic approach to the collaborative process is outlined in detail. Professional Development and Technical Assistance are provided to establish and support effective collaborative relationships and practices such as:
- Writing measurable, standards-based IEP goals and objectives
- Curriculum standards review
- Defining roles and responsibilities within the service delivery team
- Co-planning and co-teaching in the general education classroom
- Providing appropriate accommodations and modifications through differentiated instruction
- Creation and management of materials
- Observation and documentation techniques
- Measurement and assessment
