CREC: Speech and Language Services | Hartford, Connecticut

CREC’s team of Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) partner with schools and districts across Connecticut to advance communication, literacy, and access for all learners. Our specialists bring deep expertise in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), social communication, language development, and executive functioning, supporting students from preschool through transition age.
We collaborate with educators, administrators, and families to ensure communication supports are meaningful, functional, and embedded across school environments. From comprehensive evaluations to job-embedded coaching, our goal is to help every student find their voice and thrive as a communicator.

Building Communication. Empowering Participation.

Comprehensive Speech and Language Supports

CREC’s SLPs provide evidence-based evaluation, consultation, and capacity-building services that include:

AAC Evaluation and Implementation
Specialized SLPs conduct comprehensive AAC assessments and communication trials in authentic school settings. We identify tools and strategies—from low-tech communication boards to high-tech speech-generating devices—that empower students to communicate across all environments.
Our experts provide ongoing training, modeling, and job-embedded coaching to help district teams integrate AAC into daily routines and instruction.

Social Communication and Pragmatic Language
Our SLPs support students with autism, ADHD, and other social communication needs through structured social learning frameworks, role play, video modeling, and classroom-based collaboration. We help teams promote peer interaction, perspective-taking, and real-world communication success.

Language and Literacy Integration
Communication and literacy are deeply connected. CREC SLPs work alongside classroom teachers to align oral and written language instruction, supporting vocabulary, syntax, comprehension, and writing. Services may include classroom consultation, co-teaching, or targeted intervention design.

Executive Function and Metacognitive Skills
Our specialists help students strengthen self-regulation, planning, organization, and self-monitoring by addressing the language of thinking. Through collaborative intervention with educators, we help students learn to use language to guide attention and behavior.

Fluency and Voice
CREC SLPs provide evidence-based strategies for students who experience stuttering, cluttering, or voice disorders. Consultation and coaching help teams reinforce strategies across classroom and social contexts.

Speech Sound and Phonological Disorders
Our experts design individualized interventions and train staff on phonological awareness and sound production strategies that promote intelligibility and literacy development.

Specialized Evaluations

Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS-2)
CREC provides comprehensive ADOS-2 evaluations conducted by trained clinicians as part of a multidisciplinary assessment process for students suspected of having autism spectrum disorder or related social communication differences.

Ecological and Functional Communication Assessments
Understanding a student’s communication profile requires context. CREC SLPs conduct ecological evaluations to observe how students communicate, participate, and perform across settings—informing interventions that are relevant, sustainable, and functional.

Independent Educational Evaluations (IEEs)
CREC offers independent, objective speech-language evaluations that meet IDEA requirements and include practical, evidence-based recommendations for instruction and therapy.
