Former Canadian Professional Football Player to Coach CREC Colts Varsity Football Team

(Enfield, CT) The CREC Interscholastic Athletic Program has hired Maurice ‘Moe’ Lloyd, a behavioral specialist at the CREC Public Safety Academy and a former linebacker coach and defensive coordinator at Bloomfield High School, to coach the CREC Colts varsity football team. CREC’s football program is heading into its fourth year and its third varsity season next fall. It will have student athletes from CREC Academy of Aerospace and Engineering, CREC Metropolitan Learning Center and the host school, CREC Public Safety Academy. The team is coming off a 2-8 season. Lloyd coached at New London High School as the assistant offensive line and linebacker coach from 2011-2012. He then moved on to coach at Bloomfield High School from 2012-2016, where he continued to coach linebackers. Lloyd became the Defensive Coordinator in 2014, and helped lead the Warhawks to the Class S State Championship in 2015.

“It’s a new challenge, a new start. I’m looking forward to working with the players and helping them take whatever skills they learn on the field to the classroom, whether it’s being on time or learning that they are accountable for their actions. I want them to understand that football is a privilege, not a right and that their grades dictate whether they can play,” Lloyd said.

“We are excited to have Coach Lloyd taking over the program. As a full-time employee at Public Safety Academy, we have already witnessed his innate ability to connect with our students and we are sure that this will translate well to the student-athletes. His playing experience speaks for itself and he has had the privilege of being a part of one of the most successful coaching staffs in the state. We are confident that he will lead the program and continue to strive to meet our ultimate goal of raising citizen-athletes with great character who will be productive and contributing members of society,” commented CREC Athletic Director, Jonathan Winer.

Originally from Daytona Beach, Florida, Lloyd came to Connecticut on a football scholarship to the University of Connecticut. He played at UConn for four years, starting as a true freshman on special teams before earning the starting position at linebacker. He led the team in tackles four out of the six games in which he started. He recorded 62 tackles his freshman year and started at the weakside linebacker for subsequent years at UConn, averaging 120 tackles per year. He started in the first bowl game to which UConn was invited, racking up 19 tackles, one sack, and four tackles for loss. In that game, Lloyd broke the Motor City Bowl record of 15 total tackles.

After graduating from UConn with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Lloyd played in the Canadian Football League (CFL). He played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, winning a Grey Cup in 2007, being named a Western All-Star twice and a CFL All-Star once. After becoming a free agent, Lloyd went on to play two years with the Edmonton Eskimos being named Western All-Star and CFL All-Star.
